Stanley Barracks

If, one day, you find yourself wandering around Exhibition Place, you might come across this Ontario Heritage Trust plaque. It's in the east end, west of the Automotive Building near Lake Shore Boulevard West, in front of the Officers' Quarters, the only remaining building of Stanley Barracks. Here's what the plaque says:

The British army established a military post here in 1840-41 to replace aging Fort York. Known as the New Fort, it consisted of seven limestone buildings around a parade square, and a number of lesser structures. Massive defensive works were planned for the perimeter but never built. In 1893 the fort was renamed Stanley Barracks in honour of Governor General Lord Stanley. Canadian forces assumed responsibility for the post in 1870 and garrisoned it until 1947. The barracks then served as public housing until the early 1950s, when all but this building, the Officers' Quarters, were demolished.

I'm researching My family {BAILEY}. BAILEY, Wm. Ralph b. june 2 1871 in Welland, York, d. 1930 Toronto. He was in the Canadian Militia 1892-1895, 1895-1898, 1915-1919. I believe he was part of the [10th] Royal Grenadiens, which became the 123 Pioneer Batalion CEF, then Ist Infantry Brigade, part of the Ist Division, The Royal Regiment of Canada. Pvt. BAILEY Regiment # 404293@404993. His Attestation Paper dated June 1915 Ref# RG 150 1992-93 /166 Box 3533. BAILEY,Wm Ralph at the age of 26 -private RCD, St. Catherines, resided at the STANLEY BARRACKS in Toronto. s/o William and Mary Elizabeth Bailey married Bridget Barry , 20, Co. Kerry, d/o John and Mary Barry. witn: Ernest Demers, 792 King St W. and Lucy Barry,61 Hackney st,on June 22 1897. Any other info you may have would be appreciated. Thank you.

My neighbour's house in Mississauga is built of recycled bits of the demolished Stanley Barracks buildings. Her father was a Sergeant Major or a Captain at the barracks when they were demolished and he managed to get some of the materials for his house.
