Beginning in the 1870s, the healthcare facilities on this site played an important role in the care of patients with contagious diseases. By 1957, the threat of epidemics was no longer as serious as it had been. The hospital's mandate was expanded to include chronic illnesses and rehabilitative services, with specializations in orthopedics, surgery, oncology, neurotrauma, amputees, post-cardiac patients, and palliative care.
In 1959 the architecture firm of Chapman and Hurst was awarded a commission to design an exciting new Riverdale Hospital building. Their design offered patients attractive views of Riverdale Park. The choice of the interior brick and woodwork finishings provided a warm and comforting effect.
The design also used bright colours and playful forms. For example, there was a large mosaic mural in the hospital lobby. Mushroom-shaped canopies marked its entrance. The canopies have been preserved as an example of the former architecture. The mosaic mural, call Life, has been restored. It is now on the main floor of the new hospital.
