The first sanatorium in the world devoted exclusively to the treatment of children with tuberculosis, Queen Mary Hospital was opened in 1913. It formed part of a complex with the Toronto Hospital for Consumptives, which had been established in 1904, and continued that institution's pioneering programs in the care of children. In 1923 its services were expanded with the addition of a new wing and the opening of a school under the supervision of the Toronto Board of Education. The incidence of tuberculosis decreased during the following decades, fewer patients and declining use finally leading to closure of the hospital in 1970. Four years later the building was demolished and West Park Hospital, a chronic care and rehabilitation centre, was erected on this site.

I was there with my sister and my cousin. My dad was in the adult wing. I did not like it.

My mom was a patient at this hospital around 1940. Her name is Daisy Arthur and she is of Cree Indian decent. If anyone has pictures of this time or heard of her, it would be so wonderful to know.

Hello, I was a patient from fall of 1968 to January 1969 at Queen Mary's. I was roommate with two French girls from Penetanguishene and an Italian girl about 11 yrs. old. The Inuit were at the other end. There some memories there I saw that affected one patient very much so. I am from Moosonee,Ontario. The staff were very kind and some were somewhat elderly as that was about 40 yrs. ago. Does anyone have any pictures of the hospital and its patients? I do hope there is someone out there that I can communicate with about the old days. Thanking in advance.

I was in Queen Mary's hospital in 1965 with a bunch of other Inuit...I wanted to see the old picture of it before it was taken out. Does anyone have the old picture? There was a circle of road, I remember, I was only 6 years old... My e-mail is: [email protected]. My name was Kunnuk E7-1615 but now I am Kunnuk Takpannie originally from Apex Hill in Iqaluit...but I live in Ottawa. I need the address. I want to go and see it....
