Keating Coffee House

Attached to a pillar inside a supermarket at 80 Front Street East, is this Bruce Bell History Project plaque which says:

On this site in 1833 stood Keating Coffee House, also known as York's Fourth Theater. In the back hall that was about 20 m long and held two to three hundred people theatrical and operatic performances took place. Patrons sat on wooden benches, tickets were about 2 cents, lighting was by candlelight, programs were slips of paper and a comedy team known as Mr. and Mrs. Thorne were a huge draw.
