Ernest Hemingway lived in Toronto? He worked as a reporter for the Toronto Star? Amazing the things you learn, eh? Hemingway lived in the left side of this building at 1599 Bathurst Street, while working in our city. The plaque, attached to the building, reads:

American-born Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), internationally renowned author, lived in this apartment building, 1597-1599 Bathurst Street, in 1923-24, while working as a journalist for the Toronto Star. While here he became friends with novelist Morley Callaghan and writer/broadcaster Gordon Sinclair. He returned to Paris, France, where he began his career as a novelist, producing such masterpieces as "The Sun Also Rises", "A Farewell To Arms" & "For Whom the Bell Tolls".

Don't be too proud that Hemingway lived in Toronto (for a total of 8 months). He certainly didn't have too many positive things to say about the city, or about Canada and Canadians. It's curious how his brief time there has been mythologized by Torontonians though, considering how the sentiment would likely not have been reciprocated. Hemingway would surely have scoffed at such as plaque as the one at 1599 Bathurst Street.

I first saw where Hemingway lived in Cuba and must say I am proud he also lived and worked in Toronto. Planning to visit Africa next year, I read a book " Ernest Hemingway in Africa" (not written by him) and was delighted to find the first route he took is similar to the one in my plans. This reading led me to read other books "The Young Hemingway" by Michael Reynolds (portraying a handsome Hemingway on the front cover), and "Papa Hemingway" by A.E. Hotchner- both fascinating reading. My present reading is "Green Hills of Africa" by Hemingway which will be followed by "For Whom the Bell Tolls" -I also have this movie along with "Snows of Kilimanjaro" both of which I have seen several times as well as "The Old Man and the Sea" and "A Farewell to Arms". All are great presentations of man's inner struggles which Hemingway personally suffered most of his life until his suicide in 1961. When I get the chance to look at Mount Kilimanjaro, his memory and his fascination with Kilimanjaro will be remembered by me. Did you know the book store "Chapters" do not have his books on the shelves although listed listed in the computer at the stores. Upon making a request, a salesperson brought the books from the back where they are kept. The reason given me was "his books are not on the shelves due to the fact they are frequently stolen!"

Amazing that there are people in journalism who don't know that Hemingway once lived in Toronto. Even more amazing that they don't have a clue who Hemingway was.
